Farm to Table/ Horticulture Club!

This year in the Elegant Chef we are going green!  We will be having a neighboring farm help grow fresh herbs and some vegetables in our restored green house!  We have started planting some plants and they are coming in nice!

Our mission in this club is to teach children about food and how it grows.  As the population in this world continues to rise it is important for our students in the culinary program to learn about agriculture today. Seeds are planted monthly and growth and water are recorded in a daily journal to track the students progress as the plants grow.

Herb Garden

In September and October we starting planting things like herbs Parsley and Basil.  We also started planting things like radishes, lettuce, spinach, kale, tomatoes, and eggplant. We did not have very good luck at first, but now our plants are growing nice and strong!!  


November and December we welcomed Hydroponics.  Hydroponics is when NO soil is used.  The plants actually live and grow in nothing else but water.  They are able to grow with the use of nutrients that the students put into the system on certain days.  They also check the ph balance of the machine every day to make sure the plants grow correctly.  


January is very cold month, but not in our greenhouse!  This has been the most plentiful month by far!!  We are now producing a ton a basil!  We have also picked some Swiss chard, kale, parsley, and sage.  It won't be long before we have tomatoes as well!  We have some pretty large plants and the kids are getting excited!  We have also planted some chives, peppers, asparagus, rhubarb,  and flowers.  herbs
