Greetings Everyone, Welcome to Mr. Sullivan's English Class! We are beginning an exciting academic year! This year, we are exploring a host of interesting novels, plays, short stories, essays, and poems. We will hone our writing skills in a variety of areas, with the goal of raising all of our students' communication and literacy skills to the proficient or advanced levels. Course Descriptions ENGLISH 9, ENGLISH 9 HONORS ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH LANGUAGE & COMPOSTION 12 This course is designed to follow The College Board's guidelines for Advanced Placement English Language & Composition. AP English Language and Composition requires students to analyze and evaluate complex texts and arguments and to create their own effective arguments. Students enrolled in the Advanced Placement English Language & Composition® course are expected to take the Advanced Placement English Language & Composition® national exam. This allows students the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced standing at most of the nation's colleges and universities. |
Freshman News! April 1st 2013 Welcome to Mr. Sullivan's Freshman English class. Please refer to the materials list above. Refer to this space for upcoming news and details on our course of study. This month students in Grade 9 are continuing to read the modern fantasy novel Five People You Meet In Heaven about about a man's search his life's meaning. Students are now completing the novel and are completing a literature circle assignment for this reading. The literature circle assignment includes the writing of the pre-group journal (summary, response, and prediction) as well as one of 6 different assigned roles. Novel completion is due on Friday. Students also need to hand in their completed 5 paragraph essays. Next week students will begin reading A Raisin in the Sun. |

Sophomore News April 1st 2013 Welcome to Mr. Sullivan's Sophomore English Class. Please refer to the materials list above. Check back to this space for Sophomore news and information on our course of study. This month students in Grade 10H are contnuing the compelling young adult novel Catcher in the Rye, the story of a young highschool girl with a terrible secret. Students are to complete a Final Project for this reading Due next Tueday April 9th. Students are completing a lit circle for the final chapters.The literature circle assignment includes the writing of the pre-group journal (summary, response, and prediction) as well as one of 6 different assigned roles. Lit circles are due on Thursday.

Students will complete a Lit Circle for final Chapters on Tuesday. The literature circle assignment includes the writing of the pre-group journal (summary, response, and prediction) as well as one of 6 different assigned roles. Additionally, students will complete the an Essay in the Barron's book on a prompt related to Gatsby. this is due on Friday. |
A.P English Language News! (Grade 12) April 2nd 2013 Welcome to Mr. Sullivan's AP English class. Please check the materials list above for required materials. This week, seniors are completing a Composition Circle on Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty" Speech. Students will complete a pre-group journal (summary, response, and thesis statement) for the nonfiction article. Students will also complete one of 6 roles designed to strengthen their language and composition skills. These include Discussion Director, Tone Teacher, Rhetorical Researcher, Literary Luminary, Vocabulary en-richer, and Structural Examiner. Composition Circles for Henry are due on Thursday. Additionally, students will read Chapter 5 in Barron's, and will complete their first drafts of the senior project paper this week. Check back here for more A.P. English news. |
April 1st 2013 Students in Title 1 will be developing their communication and literacy skills through interactive PLATO software, which allows students to advance and master skills at their own individual pace. Grade 9 This week's lessons will be in Essentials of Reading and Writing. Grade 10 This week's lessons include Fundementals of Reading. Additionally, students will write summaries of their independent reading titles with a response and prediction of what will happen next. Due Wednesday. Students will also complete a Grammar sheet on Semi Colons on Wednesday. |
