Title I Programs
Title I programs offer support for students who require additional remediation services in order to meet state level performance expectations. Title I programs are funded with assistance from Federal Grant 305 and expenditures are monitored by the Massachusetts Department of Education. The original Title I program was developed as a part of President Johnson's "War on Poverty" and was directed at assisting those students who were economically disadvantaged. The legislation was part of the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), signed by President Bush in 2002, strengthened the intent of Title I by raising accountability standards for students who receive services under this grant funding. Nashoba Valley Technical High School follows the guidelines for Targeted Assistance programs. Students are identified for remedial reading or math assistance based on Stanford 10 scores and previous MCAS results. Those students who score below two grade levels are identified for services and receive additional support in either the reading or the math instruction as needed. As required by the regulations, all Title I teachers are Highly Qualified. |
Increasing Parent Involvement All parents at Nashoba Valley Technical High School are strongly encouraged to be active participants in their child's education. To that end, parents are encouraged to seek information from the district's website as well as to contact teachers or the guidance office directly if they have a question or concern regarding their child's educational progress. Staff contact lists are readily available on the school's website for e-mail access or to retrieve a telephone number to call directly. If the parent requires translation services, he/she should contact the Student Services office. Parents should also encourage their child to become active in extracurricular activities offered through the sports, clubs, and music program. Involvement in such extracurricular activities is expected for students who intend to further their education at the college level, and also builds teamwork and leadership skills for all students. Community service is also a mandatory part of many college applications and our graduation requirements reflect this concept by requiring students to complete five hours of community service each year in order to graduate. When possible, parents should attend school-sponsored informational events that are geared directly to them. Such events include the annual Financial Aid Night directed at all parents of Junior and Senior students. In addition, for parents of a child who is on an IEP or is enrolled in Title I supplemental classes, there are PAC (parent Advisory Council) meetings scheduled throughout the year.
