Summer is a time for fun. The pressures of homework subside and students get the chance to explore new challenges. “I can’t wait to make my movie,” beams one 6th grader as she counts down the days to summer vacation.
Harnessing the potential of these open-ended days is the goal at Empow Studios’ summer camps. “We really make it fun for campers to learn,” says program director Matt Silverstein. “We mix a large array of technical learning programs with group games like Zombie Tag, Museum and some special activities that are only found at Empow.”
Empow Studios hosts over 1,000 campers throughout the summer at its existing camp locations. “With such overwhelming interest, we knew it was time to expand and bring our unique creative technology camp to even more children,” says Empow founder and CEO Leonid Tunik. “Westford is a vibrant community with many parents who are involved professionally with technology or engineering, and recognize the value of getting their kids excited about these new types of creative tools.”
“We’re also excited about bringing our teachers and curriculum to Westford,” adds Empow’s Outreach Director David Gutierrez. “We already have great relationships with many Westford parents who have attended camps in Lexington and Westford. It was only natural to continue broadening the opportunities for kids in Westford to learn skills that may last a lifetime and spark future career interests.
EMBRACING KIDS’ STORIES
“Empow Studios takes a playful approach to learning,” says Tunik. “We emphasize storytelling and creativity, and technology serves as a tool to tell stories in a rich way.” Guided by Empow instructors, who have degrees in film, music, computers and design, campers learn technical tools at their own level and pace as needed to create their projects.
Tech & Design Camps: Features robotics, 2D & 3D video game design, animation, coding, Scratch, 3D modeling & printing, music production, DJing, and video production. Kids choose projects to work on at their own pace, and learn computer science, engineering, and technical art skills to bring their imaginations to life.
Minecraft Camps: Empow focuses on various educational aspects of Minecraft. Campers learn electrical engineering (via redstone circuits), architecture, modding, command blocks, and work together for improvement in social skills and teamwork.
