WESTFORD -- Maria Cruz of Lowell and Jacob Dow of Ashby, both seniors, have been selected as January's Students of the Month at Nashoba Valley Technical High School.
Maria Cruz, daughter of Carlos Cruz and Luz Ferrer, is a senior in the Health Assisting program. She is currently working on her senior project, which is a study on how music affects Alzheimer’s disease patients. She is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the school chorus. She currently works at an assisted-living facility as a certified nursing assistant and plans to enter the Nursing program at Middlesex Community College and become an R.N. Maria was nominated by Guidance Counselor Jessica Silva, who wrote: “Maria always does her best and is a positive addition to the school atmosphere. She works as a CNA outside of school and takes care of her patients as if they are her own family members. She makes strong connections with her Alzheimer's patients, which is evident by her stories of interacting with them. Her sense of empathy and compassion is going to make her an amazing nurse in the future".
Jacob Dow, son of Wayne and Lisa Dow of Ashby, is a senior in the Plumbing & Heating program. An accomplished singer, Jacob recently won the title of best male vocalist in New England in the 16-to-18 age group and will travel to Tennessee in March to compete in a national contest. He also plays guitar and enjoys performing at various events and open-mike nights. He hopes to attend a four-year music college and sing professionally. Jacob was nominated by English Instructor Bruce Sullivan, who wrote: “Jacob is multitalented and always excels in my AP English class. In addition to always being prepared to do his best work, Jacob is an excellent writer and an accomplished country singer. He is making his way to Nashville this spring with the chance to showcase his incredible talents".
